About

Vithèque presents Vidéographe’s collection. Vidéographe’s collection brings together more than 2,500 works created by nearly 1,000 artists, and continues to grow each year. A rich cultural heritage, our collection shines a light on the artistic discourses and social movements that have shaped the landscape since the beginning of the 1970s.

Active in distribution since its foundation, Vidéographe has contributed to the growth and democratization of video-based work by supporting a variety of approaches. Our collection holds the work of numerous artists and filmmakers who are now recognized as some of the most important figures in cinema and media art. From political documentaries to frame-by-frame animation and glitch video, our rich collection offers a window onto the wide range of techniques and artistic movements that have shaped, and continue to shape, the film and art scene in Québec and Canada.

More than simply an accessible viewing platform, Vithèque is a space dedicated to research and education in the media arts. The site offers free video programmes that are renewed every three months, critical and historical texts on the media arts, and educational material. These documents are made available by the team at Vidéographe, researchers, artists, and curators.

History

Set up in 2008 and launched by Vidéographe in 2010, Vithèque is a pioneering project on an international scale, making independent video available to view online. In 2016, in order to better respond to artists’ needs and the habits of internet users, Vidéographe decided to dedicate Vithèque to its own collection exclusively.  The emphasis is on finding and showcasing new works, as well as on conservation and documentation. The search engine, navigation tool and graphics have been redesigned. This new version was launched in the spring of 2017.

About Vidéographe

Established in 1971, Vidéographe is an artist-run centre dedicated to the distribution and dissemination of independent short films, features, and video works.

Vidéographe strives to support artists through various strategies. Fair compensation for their work is a fundamental principle that we uphold through our actions. These actions are also driven by the conviction that our artistic discipline must be enriched by diverse discourses and perspectives. To this end, we work to promote recognition of the work of artists, curators, and researchers who identify with marginalized or minority identity or cultural groups.

In the same vein, Vidéographe champions the value of collaborative work and actively seeks out partnership opportunities. By developing and fostering a community of Canadian and Quebec artists and collaborators, while actively participating in Canadian and international artistic networks, we encourage the sharing of expertise and knowledge to advance our discipline and showcase its value. Finally, Vidéographe champions the accessibility to culture. We diversify our outreach strategies to reach specialists, students, and the general public alike, thereby contributing to a greater appreciation of Quebec’s and Canada’s cultural heritage.
