Hitch-Hiking

Frank Vitale explores different ways of hitchhiking and illustrates the possibilities of the "Portapack" as a light and silent recording instrument, capturing events and people. Three of Vitale's adventures are related here: in Hitchhike 1 - Auto, the spectator accompanies the author on a Canada-USA-Canada road trip; in Hitchhike 2 - Train, the author meets a young vagrant who introduces him to the thrill of "jumping" from freight trains; and in Hitchhike 3 - New York State Police, Vitale speaks of his arrest and shows the point of view of an American police officer who describes this activity as the "worst means of transportation".
